DeFelsko PosiTest DFT

Economical Paint Depth Gauge

The PosiTector 6000 is sophisticated, but also expensive, providing features that not all users need. The DFT is an inexpensive alternative which functions solely as a paint depth gauge.

This is the current version.

Version 1

Economical Paint Depth Gauge

The original Positector DFT was the first IDS project for DeFelsko. This was designed to plug the lower end of the market and prevent competitors from gaining a foothold.

The initial concepts included some very diverse ideas, looking not just at layout, but also how the device is used – flat in palm, pen grip, key-fob etc. Each was sketched, illustrated and tested with models.

This concept was picked - clean, slim, and simple to construct. The design has minimal parts and is held together with a single screw. In many ways it provided clues to the PosiTectors to come.

Version 2

With the original DFT over a dozen years old, DeFelsko asked for a new design which matched the simplicity of the original but incorporated a larger screen.

The goal was to create a design of a similar size as the original DFT, with the same ergonomics, while bringing the appearance into the evolving DeFelsko family look. The main features of this included:

  • Dark gray housing

  • Variable width yellow outline to keypad

  • Round buttons

  • A subtle waist above the grip area

  • A soft handgrip area with a flattened cut to form the display/keypad

As with the original design, the slim profile masks a comfortable bellied back which houses the battery.

It would have been easy to create a small cell-phone style design, but the device would have sunk into anonymity, and lost the opportunity to define DeFelsko on its own terms. Here, its ergonomics are defined, its heritage is apparent, and its identity is clear. It may be on the economic end of the product line, but it still reflects sophistication.
