Design
I went to Central School of Art (now Central St Martin’s) in London, followed by a stint with EMDI, a London based industrial design consultancy. EMDI was working with BIC, a hi-fi company based in Long Island, designing turntables and tape decks. When the senior designer responsible for these designs chose to return to London, I replaced him in Long Island, to apply his design themes across a broader range of products.
This was followed by 9 years as in-house designer for ADDS/NCR. As a designer for ADDS, the job was always about the practical end of product manufacture, housing specific components. As a representative of the broader NCR corporation, the job was to apply corporate design standards to that product. Both functions were primarily a concept development function, using sketches, drawings and models. The engineering was handled by engineers. New designs were always being developed, but the primary achievement was the ADDS 2000 computer terminal, which simplified the terminal construction and returned production to Long Island.
When NCR/AT&T sold off ADDS, I joined my friend Mike Paloian at his industrial design consultancy, Integrated Design Systems. Here the range of products was infinite, and the lack of engineering department meant that a fluent knowledge of an engineering software was a requirement. The evolution of this software allowed me to incorporate engineering into my design process, allowing a welcome independence and control over the final results. The success of this process requires a deep knowledge of materials and processes. I have been fortunate over these last 25 years to have had the benefit of Mike’s knowledge and his support for my design efforts. I have also benefitted from the fact that the senior engineers at our client companies, have been some of the smartest people you could wish to work with, and expected only the best. It was a privilege to have had their trust.
Over the years, I have contributed to the design and/or engineering of hundreds of products. The designs shown in the attached section are a few of those which are most completely a result of my design and engineering.
While I took most of these designs from concept to engineered drawings - the bulk of the work was the engineering - I have only included the design work here, as the engineered parts are largely proprietary.
Designs include:
DeFelsko - Positector 6000
Hear Technologies - Hear Back Pro
Bruker - Atomic Force Microscope
Fonar - Stand-up MRI
Pirate Pete's - Tripstick
Parkell - Scaler
