DeFelsko PosiTector 6000

Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge

The DeFelsko PosiTector platform is remarkable for its flexibility and its ability to adapt to multiple test functions. It was a privilege to be part of its evolution over the last three generations, and to work with Leon, DeFelsko's chief engineer. His clear and uncompromising direction in this and a dozen other projects was vital to the success of the final designs.

This Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge comprises a handheld body, containing processing hardware, an interface display and input buttons. Data collection comes from a selection of interchangeable, snap-on probe heads. Most familiar would be the coating thickness version, where a car repair shop might need to check the thickness of paint.

Other functions include coating, dew point, surface profile, salt, wall thickness, and hardness. The collected data is collated and processed via DeFelsko software on a computer.

Original Design

Versions 1-5

Back in 2004, DeFelsko had established solid market leadership with their first versions of the PosiTector 6000. Its shape had became iconic in its industry for its function and they were concerned that they not lose the association.

First redesign

Version 6

The new, larger display and the snap-on heads meant that change was inevitable, but a lot of effort went into testing the ergonomics and feel of the device, with multiple rounds of models to establish the appropriate proportions. The angled display, ability to use it forwards, backwards and desk-mounted was essential.

The development of the individual probes was an ongoing process over the next years.

Second Redesign

Version 7

2009 and the need for a larger display and improved interface initiated a new design. This had to accommodate all the existing probes.

The new design followed the general look of the previous design, but evolving the detailing, with the glass cover widening the display area to appear full width.

As with the previous design, a custom rubber boot was designed for less friendly environments.

Third Redesign

Current Version

In 2019, a larger display, and component and software improvements again required an update.

By now, following the development of multiple new DeFelsko products, a corporate identity had been evolving. The ultimate design of the new 6000 incorporated the feel of the previous generations of PosiTector but also included elements of this new identity.

Again, all existing probes had to fit, although the probe adapter plate was updated to improve the environmental seal. The overmolded rubber grip was a new feature and was particularly challenging, but it was an appropriate enhancement for this market leader.

Responsibilities included both design and engineering.
