Quilt Frame
for Michelle
Michelle has a particular talent for quilting and for quilt design. A quilting frame seemed to be the perfect present, so I designed a quilt frame which could be large enough for a full quilt but able to be folded as a smaller frame or folded fully for storage – Michelle's apartment is not super large.
Michelle liked the design but it was almost a year before I could get to work on it. Cherry was my first choice of wood but I ended up with Black Walnut.
The frame is light and folds into a tight package, enclosing the foam display panels in the same volume. The panels are simple insulation foam with covers sown to fit them tightly. Michelle provided the fabric, a simple grid pattern which was perfect for its use but difficult to apply as the horizontal lines all had to line up, and the verticals had to be evenly spaced when the frame was fully open. It seemed to work out. The panels are held to the frame with string ties.
The opened frame can be leaned against a wall or supported on a fold-out leg. It is also self- supporting if one or more of the panels is angled slightly, but Michelle seems to go for the full six foot square.
